Soran Bushi - Soran Bushi

Japanese:
Soran Bushi - Soran Bushi

This is a folk song from the Sea of Japan coast of Hokkaido. It has been sung by the "yanshu" herring fishermen of the region as a work song for the offshore work of scooping up herring caught in a frame net with a large dip net about three shaku (about 90 cm) in diameter and about one jo (about 3 m) in length, using three or four people. The origin of this song is the "Kiyari" (cargo-raising woodworkers) on the coast of the former Nanbu domain of Aomori Prefecture. It was used for sandfish fishing, and in 1850 (Kaei 3), when Sato Izaemon brought the set net fishing method used for sandfish fishing to the herring fishing grounds of Utasutsu (Suttsu town, Hokkaido) and Isoya (Rankoshi town, Hokkaido), this song was also introduced and began to be used for the offshore work. When "Soran Bushi" was accompanied by Sapporo's Kozan Imai around 1935 (Showa 10), it became a song that represents Hokkaido.
