A French film made in 1931. It was director Rene Clair's third talkie after Under the Roofs of Paris (1930) and Le Million (1931), and was produced by Tobis. An escaped convict who had taken refuge in a phonograph factory and rises to the top gives up his position, and sets off on a journey to nowhere in search of "freedom" with a fellow inmate who has served his sentence and become a factory worker. The film satirizes capitalist society and machine civilization, depicting the events that led to the escapee giving up his position and setting off on a journey to nowhere in search of "freedom" with a fellow inmate who has served his sentence and become a factory worker, contrasting the modern factory where machines control humans with the inhuman labor of a prison.
