Italian painter. His real name was Giovanni Antonio Bazzi, and he was nicknamed Sodoma (meaning male homosexuality). He was born in Bercilli, a town in the Piedmont region of northern Italy, and died in Siena. He studied painting in northern Italy, and was particularly influenced by Leonardo da Vinci, but he went to Siena around 1500, and was active there ever since. Therefore, he should be considered a member of the Central Italian school of painting, rather than the Northern Italian school. In fact, he was influenced by Perugino and Luca Signorelli in Siena. From 1505 to 1508, he painted a mural of the life of St. Benedict at the Benedictine monastery of Monte Oliveto Maggiore near Siena, completing the series that Signorelli had begun. He also went to Rome, where he studied under Raphael and other artists, and created murals for the Villa Farnesina. He had a great influence on the next generation of Sienese Mannerist painters, especially Domenico Beccafumi (1485-1551). His representative works include "Descent from the Cross" (1502, Siena National Picture Gallery) and "The Martyrdom of St. Sebastian" (1525, Pitti Gallery, Florence). Sodoma's paintings are somewhat chaotic, but his figures have a particular elegance that makes them appealing.
