Sodom - English

Sodom - English

The name of a town that appears in the Old Testament. The family of Lot, nephew of Abraham, the father of the Israelites, settled in this town, but it is said that due to the moral corruption of its inhabitants, the town was destroyed along with Gomorrah (in English, Gomorrah, in Hebrew, `amōrāh) by sulfur and fire sent down from heaven. Lot and his daughters were rescued, but his wife turned into a pillar of salt because she looked back while fleeing (Genesis 13, 18-19). Based on this legend, Sodom (and Gomorrah) later came to be used as a symbol of a city of vice and decadence that must be judged by God. The English word "sodomy" meaning "male homosexuality" also comes from this legend. The ancient cities of Sodom and Gomorrah are now said to be submerged under the waters of the southern end of the Dead Sea.
