An abbreviation for unidentified flying object. It began in 1947 when American businessman K. Arnold witnessed a series of disk-shaped objects flying near the top of Mount Rainier in Washington State from his plane and named them flying saucers. Since then, hundreds of sightings of unidentified flying objects have been reported every year, and from the perspective of national defense, the U.S. Air Force and others have conducted detailed investigations, and they have come to be collectively referred to as UFOs. Most are misidentifications of celestial bodies such as meteors, meteorological phenomena such as mirages, man-made objects such as balloons, aircraft, and rockets, or animals, but some are completely unidentified.

unidentified flying objectの略で，未確認飛行物体をいう。1947年に米国実業家K.アーノルドがワシントン州レーニア山頂近くを飛ぶ一連の円盤状物体を機上から目撃し，flying saucer（空飛ぶ円盤）と名付けたのが始まり。以後正体のつかめない飛行物体の目撃が毎年数百例も報告され，国防上の見地から米国空軍その他が詳細に調査，UFOと総称されるようになった。大部分は流星等の天体，蜃気楼(しんきろう)等の気象現象，気球・航空機・ロケット等の人工物体，動物等の誤認だが，全く正体不明のものもある。
