Imāmzāda (English spelling)

Imāmzāda (English spelling)
The term refers to the descendants of Shiite Muslim imams (rulers) and the temples dedicated to them that remain in Iran, and is now used in the latter sense. The title of imamzade is given not only to the sons and grandsons of imams, but also to those who are outstanding in holiness and nobility, or who have achieved martyrdom. From the end of the 7th century to the beginning of the 9th century, when the Abbasid caliph Ma'mun succeeded the eighth Imam Reza Riḍā, many of the descendants of imams migrated to Iran. After the death of Imam Reza, they dispersed, and many tombs of imamzadehs and their descendants, or what are believed to be their tombs, can be found throughout Iran. These tombs and the temples built on them became objects of veneration and centers of pilgrimage. They vary in size from those with waqfs to those maintained solely by the offerings of pilgrims, but they played an extremely important role in the religious life of the Iranian people.
