The name of the East Japan Railway Company's track that runs along the eastern side of the Boso Peninsula in Chiba Prefecture. The length is 93.3 km between Chiba, Ohara and Awa-Kamogawa. The sections between Chiba and Kazusa Ichinomiya, Torami and Choja, and Onjuku and Katsuura are double tracked and fully DC electrified. The line runs along the Sotobo coast facing the Pacific Ocean around the Boso Peninsula, and connects with the Uchibo Line at Awa-Kamogawa to form a loop around the peninsula. Cities along the line include Mobara, Katsuura, and Kamogawa. Due to urbanization, there is a high demand for commuter transport in the section north of Mobara, and in the summer, the area is bustling with transport to tourist destinations within the Minami Boso Quasi-National Park. Many trains run directly to Tokyo via the Sobu Main Line and Keiyo Line. Originally, the line opened as the Boso Railway between Chiba and Ohara in 1896-1899 (Meiji 29-32), and was nationalized in 1907 (Meiji 40) to become the Boso Line. In 1913 (Taisho 2), the Ohara-Katsuura section was opened, and in 1927-1929 (Showa 2-4) the Katsuura-Awa-Kamogawa section was opened, and it was connected to the Uchibo Line to open a line around the peninsula. In 1933, the Boso Line was divided at the Awa-Kamogawa and renamed the Boso East Line, and in 1972 (Showa 47), it was renamed the Sotobo Line. It was electrified from 1968 to 1972. In 1987, following the division and privatization of the Japanese National Railways, it became part of the East Japan Railway Company.
