Christian trade unions were born in the second half of the 19th century in continental European countries, a generation after the Industrial Revolution in Britain. The dominant trade union movement at the time was linked in purpose and platform to socialism and socialist parties, and Christian trade unions were formed in part as a reaction to that. The origins of the Catholic trade union movement in Germany are said to date to a speech given by Bishop Wilhelm Kettler of Mainz in 1869. Pope Leo XIII's famous encyclical Rerum Nourm (New Matter) of 1891 proclaimed the dignity of the human person and clarified the church's mission regarding labor issues, bringing a new view of work to the whole of Europe and becoming an opportunity for the development of Christian trade unions.
