[1] (noun) (a translation of vajra. Transliterated as bāṇḍra, bāsara, etc.; meaning the hardest of metals)① A Buddhist term. (a) The hardest metal. It refers to the diamond as a jewel or the vajra as a weapon. ※Sandai Jitsuroku, Third Year of the Jogan Era (861), March 14th: “All the people are happy. The four realms are calm. The heavenly officials and the vajra are in charge. All are protected by one vajra.” (Mahavairocana Sutra, 1) (b) A metaphor for something extremely solid and indestructible. Japan's first battlecruiser, completed in England in 1913. Standard displacement 27,500 tons. Converted into a fast battleship in 1937. Sunk off the coast of Taiwan in 1939.
