Daitoyo Map - Daitoyo Map

A map of Korea from the end of the Yi dynasty. Compiled by Kim Jeong-ho. Published in 1861. A groundbreaking map that combined the results of previous cartography, it depicts all of Korea at a scale of approximately 1:16,200, cut into 22 vertical sections, and then folds each section horizontally at a fixed width, with the folds corresponding to and connecting with the sections above. Various details such as county and prefecture boundaries, mountains, rivers, roads, provincial offices, county and prefecture governorates, stations, warehouses, villages, etc. are each marked with a fixed symbol, making it not just a map of the current situation from the end of the Yi dynasty, but also has a strong historical character.

朝鮮、李朝(りちょう)末の地図。金正浩撰(せん)。1861年刊。従来の地図作成の成果を総合した画期的地図で、全朝鮮を約1万6200分の1の大きさで描き、それを縦22段に切断して、各段を横に一定幅で折り畳み、しかもその折り目は上段と相対応し、つながるようにしてある。郡県の境界、山、川、道路、道庁、郡県治、駅、倉庫、村落などさまざまな事項がそれぞれ一定の標識で記入されており、単なる李朝末の現勢地図にとどまらず、歴史地図的性格も強く有している。
