João de Barros

João de Barros
1497‐1562
Portuguese historian. Born the son of a court official, he was raised and educated at the court. He was a capable high-ranking official, but was also an excellent writer and a typical intellectual of the Portuguese Renaissance. His main work as a historian is the four-volume History of Asia (1552-1615). This was to form part of a vast encyclopedic work that he himself envisioned. His aim was to create a monument to the Portuguese achievements in the East, and he argued that the Portuguese expansion into the East was a crusade that was an extension of the war of recovery on the Iberian Peninsula.
