This refers to the clearing of new land and the passage of water from lakes, marshes, rivers, and other water sources for the purposes of irrigation, water supply, navigation, power generation, or drainage, as well as the artificial waterways. Waterways are either open ditches or tunnels depending on the topography. Examples of canals can be found all over Japan, but many of them are called yosui (a waterway), such as the Hakone Canal, which takes water from Lake Ashi to irrigate the Shizuoka Prefecture side. Representative canals include the Asaka Canal, which takes water from Lake Inawashiro to irrigate the Koriyama region, and the Lake Biwa Canal, which takes water from Lake Biwa for the comprehensive development of Kyoto (irrigation, water supply, power generation, navigation).
