Quena - English spelling quena Spanish

An open-tubed vertical flute used in the Andes region of South America. Since the Chavin culture of the Incas, which began around 900 BC, it has been made from a variety of materials, including animal and human bones. Modern quenas are 25 to 50 centimeters long, and many are made from reed stalks. There are five to six finger holes spaced evenly along the lower half of the tube, and a thumb hole in the center of the underside. The mouthpiece is cut into a U- or V-shape on the upper edge of the tube, like a shakuhachi. It is widely used in Quechua and Aymara folk music, and since the 1960s has also been used in popular music, earning it a large fanbase.
