A large-scale orchestral suite consisting of 22 pieces composed by Handel (according to the Halle edition of "New Complete Works of Handel" edited by Redlich). Although the truth of the story is uncertain, there is the following anecdote about the creation of the work. When Handel emigrated from Germany to England, he incurred the displeasure of the Elector of Hanover whom he served, but in 1714 the Elector's master was welcomed as King George I of England. So Handel composed this music as a way of reconciliation, and performed it in front of the King during a boat trip on the Thames in the summer of 1717, and once again won the King's favor. As it was written for a special event, there are some unclear points about the arrangement of the movements and the instrumentation, and in modern times it is often performed in the version arranged by Harty into six pieces and the version arranged by Chrysander into 20 pieces. Although it is a work that belongs to the so-called practical music, it maintains a high musical standard and is widely loved as a masterpiece of Baroque music due to its clear expression.
