Isatin - Isatin (English spelling)

A heterocyclic compound containing a nitrogen atom in the ring. It is also called 1H-indole-2,3-dione. It exists as an equilibrium mixture of lactam and lactim forms, which are easily interconverted. The lactim form is called ψ (psi)-isatin.

It is a yellow-red crystal that sublimates. It is slightly soluble in cold water, but is soluble in hot water and hot ethanol, but is poorly soluble in ether. It is hydrolyzed to isatinic acid when heated. It is used as an intermediate for vat dyes and as a detection reagent for silver and copper.

環内に窒素原子を含む複素環式化合物の一つ。1H-インドール-2,3-ジオンともよばれる。容易に相互変換するラクタム形とラクチム形の平衡混合物として存在する。ラクチム形をψ(プサイ)-イサチンとよぶ。

　黄赤色結晶で昇華性がある。冷水には溶けにくく、熱水、熱エタノールに溶けるが、エーテルには難溶である。加熱すると加水分解してイサチン酸になる。バット染料（建染(たてぞ)め染料）の中間体、銀および銅の検出試薬としての用途をもつ。
