Isazumi Shrine

Japanese: 伊佐須美神社 - いさすみじんじゃ
Isazumi Shrine

It is located in Miyabayashi, Aizumisato-cho, Onuma-gun, Fukushima Prefecture. It enshrines Izanagi-no-Mikoto, Izanami-no-Mikoto, Ohiko-no-Mikoto, and Takenu-nakawawake-no-Mikoto. According to the legend, during the 10th year of the reign of Emperor Sujin, when the generals were dispatched to the four provinces, Ohiko-no-Mikoto and Takenu-nakawawake-no-Mikoto met in this place and enshrined the two gods Izanagi and Izanami-no-Mikoto on Mikagura-dake at the border. It later passed through Hakase-yama, Myojin-dake, and Takada Minamihara, before being enshrined in its current location in 560 (the 21st year of the reign of Emperor Kinmei). In 843 (Jowa 10), it was given the rank of Junior Fifth Rank, and in the Engi system, it was ranked as a Myojin Taisha. Even after the Middle Ages, it was highly revered by successive feudal lords as the second shrine in Oshu and the guardian deity of Aizu. It was formerly a Kokuhei-chusha (mikoshi) shrine. Its annual festival is held on September 15th. The Ota-Ue Festival (prefecturally designated intangible cultural property) held on July 12th is known as one of Japan's three major rice planting festivals. Shrine treasures include a vermilion-lacquered, gilt-bronze-decorated portable shrine (nationally designated important cultural property) donated by the Ashina clan, and a wooden carved lion-dog (prefecturally designated important cultural property). There is an Iris Garden, where 100,000 irises bloom.
