An old town in Minamiuonuma District, southern Niigata Prefecture. It occupies the central Muikamachi Basin and mountainous areas on the east and west. Muikamachi, in the center, developed as the junction of the Mikuni Kaido and Shimizu Kaido roads and the terminus of water transportation on the Uono River. It is served by the Joetsu Line and the Kan'etsu Expressway. It produces badminton rackets. It is home to Muikamachi Onsen and has many ski resorts. In November 2004, it merged with Yamato Town, Minamiuonuma District, to become a city, forming Minamiuonuma City. 263.79 km2 . Population: 28,536 (2003). 新潟県南部,南魚沼郡の旧町。六日町盆地中央部と東西の山地を占め,中心の六日町は三国(みくに)街道と清水街道の分岐点,魚野川水運の終点として発達,上越線,関越自動車道が通じる。バドミントンラケットを産する。六日町温泉があり,スキー場も多い。2004年11月南魚沼郡大和町と合併し市制,南魚沼市となる。263.79km2。2万8536人(2003)。
