An ancient city located in the Orontes River basin, between Antioch and Aleppo in northern Syria. Today, Tell Atchana, Turkey. It was surveyed by C. Woolley in 1936-49. Traces of habitation can be seen from the 4th millennium BC, but the city flourished most during the reign of Jari-rim (reigned c. 1780-50 BC), a contemporary of Hammurabi of Babylon. His walled palace is as magnificent as that of Zimri-rim of Mari (reigned c. 1779-61 BC). It was later conquered by the Hittite king Suppilulumash I (reigned c. 1375-35 BC), but continued to prosper as a commercial city with the seaport Al-Mina until its destruction by the invasion of the "Sea Peoples" in c. 1194 BC.
