1892‐1949 Swedish mathematician. Born in Sweden, he entered Uppsala University in 1910 and received his doctorate in 1916 for his work on the theory of the Neumann-Poincaré problem for domains surrounded by nonsmooth surfaces. His research into integral equations with singular kernels became the central focus of his life. In 1924 he became a professor at Stockholm University, and in 1927 he became director of the Mittag-Leffler Institute, where he served as editor-in-chief of the institute's journal, Acta Mathematica. In addition to the theory of integral equations, his research was diverse, including the theory of real functions of one variable, the theory of complex functions, and the theory of Fourier integrals.
