Swedish mathematician. Born in Sweden, he entered Uppsala University in 1910 and received his doctorate in 1916 for his work on the theory of the Neumann-Poincaré problem for domains surrounded by nonsmooth surfaces. His research into integral equations with singular kernels became the central focus of his life. In 1924 he became a professor at Stockholm University, and in 1927 he became director of the Mittag-Leffler Institute, where he served as editor-in-chief of the institute's journal, Acta Mathematica. In addition to the theory of integral equations, his research was diverse, including the theory of real functions of one variable, the theory of complex functions, and the theory of Fourier integrals.

スウェーデンの数学者。スウェーデンに生まれ，1910年ウプサラ大学入学，16年滑らかでない曲面で囲まれた領域に対するノイマン=ポアンカレ問題に関する理論で学位を得たが，その際生ずる特異核をもつ積分方程式の研究が生涯の中心問題となった。24年ストックホルム大学教授となり，27年にミッターク･レフラー研究所長となり，同研究所の機関誌《アクタ･マテマティカ》の編集長として活躍した。彼の研究は積分方程式論のほかに一変数の実関数論，複素関数論，フーリエ積分論など多岐にわたっている。
