Japanese: 象嵌 - ぞうがん

A technique of decorative crafts. Also written as inlay. It is the inlaying of other materials (sometimes of the same type) onto the surface of materials such as metal, ceramics, or wood. Metal inlays include thread inlay, in which patterns or letters are inlaid in a line, flat inlay, in which patterns or letters are inlaid in a wide plate shape, cloth inlay, high inlay, and cut inlay. In ceramics, clay of different colors is inlaid into the base to create pictures or patterns, which are then glazed and fired. In wood, rosewood, ebony, ivory, etc. are mainly inlaid.

工芸装飾の技法。象眼とも書く。金属・陶磁・木材などの材料の表面に他の材料（同種のこともある）をはめこむこと。金属の象嵌には，文様や文字を線状にはめこんだ糸象嵌，板状に幅広くはめた平象嵌や，布目象嵌，高肉象嵌，切嵌(きりはめ)象嵌などがある。陶磁器では素地に異なった色の土を嵌入して絵や文様を表し，釉(うわぐすり)をかけて焼き，木材では主として紫檀，黒檀や象牙などをはめこむ。
