Upanayana (English spelling)

Upanayana (English spelling)
A Hindu religious and social ritual. It is an initiation ceremony to enter the first of four stages of school life, and only through this ceremony do people become eligible to become members of a caste. The ages for initiation are set at 8-16 years old for Brahmins, 11-22 years old for Kshatriyas, and 12-24 years old for Vaishyas. The initiates put on new clothes and go to their guru's house carrying 21 sticks of firewood. At this time, Brahmins wear a sacred cotton cord from their left shoulder to their right armpit. It is said that after this ceremony, they are reborn as Hindus, and the top three castes are called dvijas (reborn). (→ ashram)
