Allen, GC (English spelling) AllenGC

...Historian James Murdoch (1856-1921), writer L. Hearn, and Shinto scholar Richard Arthur Ponsonby-Fane (1878-1937) all conducted their research while working as English teachers in Japan. This tendency was also shared by AD Waley, the translator of The Tale of Genji, historian GB Sansom, Charles Ralph Boxer (1904- ), and economist George Cyril Allen (1900-82), who achieved notable results from the 1930s onwards. Waley's achievements were a by-product of the expansion of the Japanese books held by the British Museum, while the other three began with their experiences in Japan related to diplomacy or education.
