Japanese: 不破伴左衛門 - ふわ・ばんざえもん

The protagonist of the kabuki play "Sayato." It is said to be based on Fuwa Mansaku, a page from Owari who served Toyotomi Hidetsugu (1568-95) and was a favorite of the late Toyotomi Hidetsugu. In the play, the scene of "Sayato" where Fuwa and Nagoya Sansaburo get into a fight after touching the sheath of a sword is famous, and the current style is from "Ukiyogara Hiyoku Inazuma" (written by Tsuruya Nanboku IV), which premiered at the Edo Ichimuraza in Bunsei 6 (1823). It was also featured in "Sankai Nagoya," which premiered at the Nakamuraza in January 1697 (Genroku 10), and was played by Ichikawa Danjūrō I, who excelled in rough roles. At this time, the image of Fuwa has lost its page-boy features and looks more like an enemy, which is thought to be because Danjūrō had never played a young man's role in his career, but instead had played an enemy role.

歌舞伎「鞘当」の主人公。モデルは豊臣秀次(1568～95)に仕え,寵愛された尾張出身の小姓不破万作といわれている。芝居では名古屋山三郎と刀の鞘の触れ合いから争いになる「鞘当」の場面が有名で,現行の型は文政6(1823)年江戸市村座初演「浮世柄比翼稲妻」(4代目鶴屋南北作)による。すでに元禄10(1697)年1月中村座初演「参会名護屋」にも仕組まれ,荒事を得意とする初代市川団十郎が扮している。このとき,不破像から小姓の面影が消え敵役風になったのは,団十郎の経歴に若衆方の時期がなく,反対に敵役の時期があったからではないかと思われる。
