Dedicated railway - Senyo-tetsudo

A railway that a public entity or a private person has laid down for its own use after notifying the Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, and that is directly connected or connected to a railway, track or other private railway for public use (excluding connections with railways powered by human or horse power). It refers to a railway that is not used by the general public, but is laid down and owned by the operator of a factory or mine to transport employees, materials, products, etc. A private line that a public entity or a private person lays down at its own expense for itself or for a specific shipper, with the approval of each JR company, is treated as a siding of each JR company, so it is different from a private railway. Private railways are stipulated in Article 2, Paragraph 6 of the Railway Business Law (Law No. 92 of 1986), and the notification procedure is stipulated in Article 39 of the same law (the specific procedure is stipulated in the Railway Business Law Enforcement Regulations and Ministry of Transport Ordinance No. 6 of 1987). The technical standards are stipulated in the Ministerial Ordinance Prescribing Technical Standards for Private Railway Facilities (Ministry of Transport Ordinance No. 17 of 1987). As of March 1995, there were 27 private railway companies operating a total length of 99.6 kilometers.

公共団体または私人が自己の用に供するため、国土交通大臣に届け出て敷設した鉄道で、公衆の用に供する鉄道、軌道または他の専用鉄道と直通または連絡（人力・馬力を動力とするものとの連絡を除く）するもの。一般公衆の利用に供することはなく、たとえば、工場・鉱山などで従業員や資材・製品などを運送するために、その経営者が敷設し、所有する鉄道をさす。公共団体または私人が自己または特定荷主のために、JR各社の承認を経て自己の負担で敷設する専用線は、JR各社の側線の扱いを受けるので、専用鉄道とは異なる。専用鉄道は鉄道事業法（昭和61年法律92号）第2条第6項に規定され、届出手続については同法第39条で定めている（具体的手続は鉄道事業法施行規則・昭和62年運輸省令第6号による）。その技術的な基準は専用鉄道の施設の技術上の基準を定める省令（昭和62年運輸省令第17号）による。1995年（平成7）3月現在、専用鉄道は27社、99.6キロメートルに及ぶ。
