…Latvian poet. Born to a poor peasant family, he served a long military career in Russia and Latvia. He lamented the plight of his homeland, which had suffered under the humiliating rule of Germans and Russians for the past 700 years, and participated in the romantic and nationalist literary movement along with poet Auseklis (1850-79). He later published “Ráčuplėsis, Hero of the Latvian Nation” (1888), which is celebrated not only in Latvia but also in the Soviet Union as one of the greatest heroic epics. …
