A type of English comedy. Based on the medieval medical theory that a person's temperament is determined by the combination of four bodily humors (blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile), this comedy aims to create humor by introducing characters who are particularly endowed with each of the four humors that result from this theory. B. Johnson's Ten Men, Ten Colors (1598) is said to be a typical example. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
