A port town on the northeastern tip of the Cendrawasih (Dobelai) Peninsula in the western part of New Guinea Island, Indonesia. It is a good port located north of the small Dore Bay, but it is not a very healthy place due to its high temperature and humidity. British merchants came to the town at the end of the 18th century to collect spices, and from 1855 German missionaries used it as a missionary base. Since 1896 it has been the seat of the Dutch local government in the northwestern part of New Guinea. Currently, it is home to a small shipyard, a sawmill, an agricultural experiment station, and more. It was a battlefield during the Pacific War.
