In Japan, it is sometimes used synonymously with soma. The word soma originally meant the mountain itself where trees were planted and timber was harvested, i.e. somayama, but later it came to refer to the timber extracted from the mountain, somagi, the felling of the trees, somadori and somadate, the timber construction, and even the river transport of timber, a broad range of woodsmen. In particular, the person who cuts down trees in the somadori and somadate forests, and the person who makes a living from this, is called a lumberjack, and sometimes woodcutter and woodman are used synonymously.
