(1) A divalent atomic group formed by removing two hydrogen atoms from propane, -C 3 H 6 - . It does not exist in a free state. (2) One of the ethylenic hydrocarbons. Chemical formula: C 3 H 6 . Also called propene. A colorless gas with a weakly irritating odor. Boiling point: -47.70°C. It is produced in large quantities industrially by low-temperature fractional distillation of petroleum cracking gas or by dehydrogenation of propane. It is used as a fuel as liquefied petroleum gas and as a raw material for the production of polymerized gasoline. It is also used as a raw material for petrochemical products such as isopropyl alcohol, acetone, propylene glycol, allyl alcohol, glycerin, acrolein, acrylonitrile, phenol, and polypropylene.
