Aya River

Japanese: 綾川 - あやがわ

A general term for the Ayakita River and Ayanan River, tributaries of the Oyodo River that flows east through central Miyazaki Prefecture. Both rivers originate in the Kyushu Mountains and flow almost parallel to each other to the southeast. They join in the west of Kunitomi Town to become the Honjo River, which then joins the Oyodo River in the west of Miyazaki City. The upstream area is national forest, with many evergreen broad-leaved forests of oaks, chinquapins, and thunbergia trees, and timber is transported to Aya Town. The prefecture-run Aya River Comprehensive Development Project was carried out in the river basin, and the Ayaminami Dam was completed in 1958, the Koganebashi Dam in 1959, and the Ayakita Dam in 1960. In addition to generating electricity, the rivers also provide irrigation water for farmland on the alluvial plateau in the western part of the Miyazaki Plain, extending to Saito City.

宮崎県中部を東流する大淀川の支流，綾北川と綾南川の総称。両河川とも九州山地に源を発し，ほぼ平行して南東に流れる。国富町西方で合流して本庄川となり，宮崎市西部で大淀川に合流。上流地域は国有林でカシ，シイ，タブノキなどの照葉樹林が多く，木材は綾町に搬出。流域では県営の綾川総合開発事業が行なわれ，1958年綾南ダム，1959年古賀根橋ダム，1960年に綾北ダムが完成。発電に利用されるほか，西都市に及ぶ宮崎平野西部の洪積台地上の耕地に灌漑用水を送っている。
