Phyllite - Phyllite

A metamorphic rock with intermediate properties between slate and schist. It has stronger schistosity and a striped structure than slate, but is finer-grained than schist, and the constituent minerals cannot be seen with the naked eye or a magnifying glass. It usually refers to black rocks whose parent rock is muddy sedimentary rock, and is composed of quartz, feldspar, muscovite, chlorite, calcite, graphite, etc. On the other hand, green, strongly schistosed rocks derived from fine-grained pyroclastic rocks such as tuff can also be counted as phyllite, and are composed of quartz, feldspar, chlorite, calcite, wedgestone, etc. In either case, recrystallization due to metamorphism is incomplete, and the coarse-grained minerals and coarse structures contained in the original rock are seen as residual minerals and structures. Phyllite is a type of rock found in the rocks of the Paleozoic and Mesozoic strata in Japan, as well as in the Sangun and Sanbagawa metamorphic rocks. The terminology used for slate, phyllite, schist, and crystalline schist is not strict, and varies slightly from person to person and from country to country.

粘板岩と結晶片岩との中間的な性質の変成岩。粘板岩に比べて片理(へんり)が強く、縞(しま)状構造もみられるが、結晶片岩よりは細粒で、構成鉱物は肉眼やルーペでは認められない。普通は泥質堆積(たいせき)岩を原岩とする黒色のものをいい、それは石英、長石、白雲母(しろうんも)、緑泥石、方解石、石墨などからなる。一方、凝灰岩のように細粒の火砕岩から導かれた、緑色で片理の強い岩石も千枚岩に数えられることがあり、それは石英、長石、緑泥石、方解石、くさび石などからなる。いずれの場合にも変成作用による再結晶は不完全で、もとの岩石に含まれていた粗粒な鉱物や粗い構造は、残留鉱物や残留構造として認められる。日本各地の中・古生層の一部や、三郡(さんぐん)変成岩、三波川(さんばがわ)変成岩のかなりの部分は千枚岩である。なお、粘板岩、千枚岩、片岩、結晶片岩などの用語法は厳密なものではなく、人によりまた国によっても互いに少しずつ相違している。
