New Year - Shinnen

Japanese:
New Year - Shinnen

It refers to the beginning of the year. Where the beginning of the year is set varies depending on the calendar. In the modern Western calendar that is used today, it is set after the winter solstice when the daylight hours are at their shortest, but in the old lunar calendar that has been used in Japan since ancient times, it is set around the beginning of spring. The center of the New Year is also divided into two types: Oshougatsu, which is set on New Year's Day, that is, the first day of the new moon, and Koshougatsu, which is set on the 15th, that is, the full moon day. The tension at the beginning of the year means that the most events are concentrated here, but Oshougatsu has many rituals centered around the visit of the New Year God and ancestors, while Koshougatsu has many agricultural prelude rituals to pray for a good harvest.
