...It feeds on small insects and spiders. The Ogasawara Skink, Cryptoblepharus boutoni , found on the Ogasawara Islands and Torishima, has a long, slender tail and its eyes are covered by fixed, transparent lower eyelids like those of a gecko. The Hemigratory Skink, Ateuchosaurus pellopleurus , found from Iwo Jima in the Nansei Islands to the Okinawa Islands, is similar in both morphology and ecology to the Sakishima Skink, but the scales on its head are different.

...The "window" allows the lizard to see outside even when the lower eyelid is closed, which is useful for lizards that often burrow into sand or soil. In the Bonin Skink, Cryptoblepharus boutonii (total length 10 cm), the lower eyelid, consisting of a circular transparent membrane, is attached to the upper eyelid, covering and protecting the eye. This snake-like eye has the same structure as the eyes of geckos, which hide in narrow gaps such as under bark, and is ideal for Bonin Skinks, who are active on tree trunks and fallen logs and can quickly hide in gaps. ...
