A clause in international transactions that stipulates that when a contract is denominated in a currency other than the US dollar, the US dollar value shall be used as the basis for settlement. It is also called a dollar clause. This clause is intended to prevent the parties to a transaction from suffering unforeseen losses due to the change in the value of the claim itself due to fluctuations in the value of currency. It can be said to replace the role of gold in a gold clause, which stipulates that claims and debts are settled based on the value of gold at a certain point in time, with the US dollar. Dollar clauses are often stipulated in long-term loans, securities investments, trade settlements, etc. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
