A general term for New York theater other than commercial Broadway theaters. They tend to be held in theaters that are much smaller than the large Broadway theaters, with seating capacities of 300 or less, and production costs and admission fees are lower than on Broadway. Off-Broadway theaters are scattered throughout Manhattan, but are particularly prevalent in Greenwich Village. The plays they perform are mainly works by unknown authors, experimental works by famous authors, and classics and foreign masterpieces that are difficult to perform on Broadway, and directors and actors tend to be less well-known than those on Broadway.
