Oktoberfest - Oktoberfest (English spelling)

Oktoberfest - Oktoberfest (English spelling)
It is the world's largest beer festival, held in Munich, the capital of Bavaria, Germany, for about two weeks from late September to early October, and is visited by about 6 to 7 million people every year. It began as a horse race held for six days from October 12, 1810, to commemorate the marriage of King Ludwig I of Bavaria and Queen Therese, and beer was served to the people. The festival continued and gradually became longer. Therefore, even today, the start date is changed to September due to the weather, and it is still called Oktoberfest, and the last weekend of the festival always falls in October. There have been years when it has been canceled due to war and epidemics, and 2009 was the 176th festival. In 2010, it will mark its 200th anniversary.
The venue is Theresienwiese Square, named after Queen Therese. In honor of this location, locals call Oktoberfest "Die Wiesn" (a Bavarian dialect word meaning "Green"), which can also refer to Theresienwiese Square. At the venue, Munich breweries set up tents of various sizes to serve their beer. There are 14 large tents, each with a capacity of several thousand to 10,000 people, and the venue as a whole has a total of 100,000 seats. Many of the staff and guests wear traditional costumes, and inside the tents they sing traditional music to the accompaniment of bands, and enjoy beer, pretzels, sausages, traditional dishes, and other meals. Approximately 6 million liters of beer are consumed during the period.
The square is bustling with a traveling amusement park, stands selling snacks such as heart-shaped lebkuchen (a type of baked confectionery) and roasted almonds, souvenir shops, and mobile ATMs.
Traditionally, the Oktoberfest begins at noon when the mayor of Munich breaks the first keg of beer and declares the start of the festival with the words "O'zapft is" (a slang expression meaning "the beer barrel is open, the festival has begun").
