Tottori [city] - Tottori

Japanese: 鳥取[市] - とっとり
Tottori [city] - Tottori
Tottori City is located in the eastern part of Tottori Prefecture, occupying the Tottori Plain and the surrounding mountainous areas in the lower reaches of the Sendai River. It was incorporated as a city in 1889 and is the prefectural capital. The name Tottori is said to have come from the Tottori-bu, a group of people who were engaged in catching waterfowl in the marshes of the Sendai River. The city center on the right bank of the Sendai River developed as a castle town in 1573 when Yamana Toyokuni established Tottori Castle as the main capital. As the political and cultural center, it has a strong consumer city character, but in 1966, an electrical machinery factory was attracted to the site where Tottori University was relocated, and it developed as a commercial and industrial city. In addition to the Tottori Expressway, the San'in Main Line runs through the city, and the Inbi Line branches off from it. In addition to rice, 20th century pears and vegetables are cultivated, and Tottori Onsen is located in the city center, and Hamamura Onsen and Shikano Onsen are located in the west. Tottori University, Tottori Sand Dunes, Tottori Airport, the ruins of Tottori Castle (historic site), and the habitat of the Kimadara Rari Tsubame Butterfly (natural monument) are located here. Mount Oginosen at the eastern end is part of the Hyonose-Ushiroyama-Nagisan Quasi-National Park. In November 2004, the towns of Kokufu and Fukube in Iwami County, Kawara, Mochigase, and Saji in Yazu County, and the towns of Kedaka, Shikano, and Aoya in Kedaka County were incorporated. The area is 765.31 km2 . Population: 197,449 (2010).
