A general term for insects belonging to the family Sialidae in the order Neuroptera, or one of these. These insects are medium-sized, with a wingspan of 20-40 mm, and are generally black-brown or black in color. They are widely distributed around the world except in the polar regions, but this small family has only 40 recorded species. In Japan, 11 species are known. Adults fly around waterside areas during the day. They appear in the grass around ponds and slow-flowing water in mountainous areas from April to July, and are said to have a short lifespan of just a few days. The eggs are tiny, elongated, cylindrical, and are laid in masses of 200-500 eggs on aquatic plants or rocks near the water's edge. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
