Born January 8, 1863 in Louisville, Kentucky
Died: May 8, 1932, West Palm Beach, Florida. American geographer. Initially studied history, but studied geography under Friedrich Ratzel in Leipzig, Germany, from 1891 to 1892 and 1895, and was strongly influenced by him. He published many books and papers combining Ratzel's geographical ideas with his own research on American history and the Mediterranean world. However, he was critical of the social organism theory that Ratzel inherited from Spencer. He trained many students at the University of Chicago and Clark University, and his environmental deterministic thinking had a great influence on American geography in the first half of the 20th century. His major works include Influences of Geographic Environment (1911) and The Geography of the Mediterranean Region (1931).
