A public utility company that supplies city gas mainly to the Kanto region. Following the transfer of the Tokyo Prefecture gas business in 1885, Shibusawa Eiichi and others founded the company as Tokyo Gas Company (reorganized as a joint-stock company in 1893) with capital of 270,000 yen. The city gas business in Tokyo began in 1874 as the Tokyo Chamber of Commerce's gas lamp business, and was transferred to Tokyo Prefecture the following year. Initially, the main demand was for lighting, but with the spread of electric lighting in the 1910s and the decline of gas lamps following the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923, the company began to develop demand for gas as fuel.
