Nobeoka Domain

Japanese:
Nobeoka Domain

This clan had its castle town of Nobeoka in Hyuga Province (Nobeoka City, Miyazaki Prefecture) and the surrounding area as its core territory. Until 1692 (Genroku 5), it was called Agata Domain, based on the old place name. In 1587 (Tensho 15), after Toyotomi Hideyoshi's subjugation of the Shimazu clan, Takahashi Mototane was appointed to the clan (53,000 koku), and in 1613 (Keicho 18), after the Takahashi clan was abolished, Arima Naozumi (53,000 koku) was appointed the following year. Naozumi's father was Harunobu, a famous Christian daimyo. The Arima clan held the clan until 1691, during which time they renovated the main castle of their castle and expanded the castle town. Following the Arima clan, Miura Akihiro was appointed to the fief in 1792 (23,000 koku), and Makino Narinaka was appointed to the fief in 1712 (Shotoku 2) (80,000 koku). The Makino clan seems to have focused on agricultural policy within the domain, and the Iwakuma Weir, completed in 1734 (Kyoho 19), is particularly famous. In 1747 (Enkyo 4), Naito Masaki was appointed to the fief (70,000 koku). At this time, the Naito clan moved from Iwaki Taira to Hyuga Nobeoka, the Inoue clan moved from Hitachi Kasama to Taira, and the Makino clan moved from Nobeoka to Kasama, in what is known as a triangular transfer of fiefs. From then on, the Naito clan remained in the fief until the abolition of the feudal domains and the establishment of prefectures. The Naito clan's territory was centered around the castle town of Nobeoka and the villages in the western Kyushu mountain range (both in Hyuga-Usuki County), totaling approximately 25,000 koku (castle-attached territory), with exclaves of approximately 25,000 koku in Miyazaki County to the south and approximately 20,000 koku in the three Bungo counties to the north (Oita, Kunisaki, and Hayami), showing a typical example of the dispersion of fudai domain territory. The Naito Nobeoka Domain was one of the few fudai domains in Kyushu, but it was located in a remote area, and none of its successive lords had ever become a Shogunate senior councilor. The so-called Oniuchi Ikki, which occurred in the Takachiho region of the Kyushu mountain range in 1869 (Meiji 2), is a typical example of a social reform uprising. The domain was abolished in 1871 and became Nobeoka Prefecture, which then became Mimitsu Prefecture, Miyazaki Prefecture, and Kagoshima Prefecture, before being incorporated into the current Miyazaki Prefecture, which was re-established in 1883.
