Swertia japonica (Swertia japonica)

A biennial plant of the Gentianaceae family. It is found in Japan, the Korean peninsula, and northern China. It is common in sunny mountains and fields. The stems are 10-30 cm tall, well branched, ridged, angular, and purple in color. The leaves are 2-3 cm long, linear, and opposite, with no stalks. In autumn, numerous white, star-shaped, five-petaled flowers with purple stripes bloom at the top of the stem. The whole plant is bitter, and the herbal medicine Touyaku is made by drying the whole plant in the shade during the flowering season, and the powder or decoction is used as a stomachic. The Japanese name comes from the fact that the plant is still bitter even after being decoctioned and shaken a thousand times.
