Chinese historian. Uighur origin. Born in Taoyuan, Hunan Province. In 1926, he participated in the Northern Expedition Army and engaged in political activities. After the establishment of the People's Republic of China, he became a professor at Peking University, vice president and Communist Party member. He advocated "creating history in order to change history," and served as the initial editor-in-chief of Outline of Chinese History, which began publication in 1962 (first edition completed in 1978). He led Chinese historiography after the founding of the People's Republic of China and had a major impact on the humanities world, but was criticized by Jiang Qing and others during the Cultural Revolution. Outline of Chinese History is still used as a textbook for the general history of China at many universities today.

中国の歴史学者。ウイグル族出身。湖南省桃源の生まれ。1926年，北伐軍に参加，政治活動に従事。中華人民共和国成立後は北京大学教授。副校長兼共産党委員となる。「歴史を変えるために歴史を創造する」と提唱，1962年に刊行が始った《中国史綱要》（1978年初版完成）で初期の編集責任者を務めるなど，建国後の中国歴史学を主導し，人文学界に大きな影響を与えたが，文革で江青らに批判された。《中国史綱要》は，現在でも多くの大学で中国通史の教科書として採用されている。
