Samori Touré

A national hero of the early colonial period who built a vast Islamic empire in the interior of West Africa in the late 19th century and persistently resisted French colonial invasions. He was born in the Konyan region of Guinea around 1830 as the son of a Djura (a group of Islamized merchants of Malinke descent) who had become farmers. At the time, inland West Africa, France and other European powers were beginning to advance from the coast to the interior, and many warlords were fighting each other and fighting each other, leading to constant wars.

19世紀末，西アフリカ内陸部に広大なイスラム帝国を建設し，フランスの植民地侵略に執拗な抵抗を繰り返した植民地化初期の民族的英雄。1830年ころ，農耕民化したジュラ(マリンケ系のイスラム化した商人グループ)の息子として，現ギニアのコニヤン地方で生まれた。当時の西アフリカ内陸部では，フランスをはじめヨーロッパ列強の，沿岸から内陸部への進出が始まり，各地には群雄が割拠して相争い，戦乱が絶え間なく続いていた。
