Battle flag

Japanese:
Battle flag

A literary magazine. It was first published in May 1928 as the journal of the All-Japan Proletarian Arts Federation (abbreviated as NAPP), which was formed in March 1928 (Showa 3) by the Japan Proletarian Arts Federation and the Avant-Garde Artists League, both of which supported the Japanese Communist Party. In December the Federation was reorganized as the All-Japan Council of Proletarian Arts Organizations (NAPP), and the newly established Senkisha began publishing the magazine. It gradually changed in character from a NAPP journal to a political enlightenment magazine, and in September 1930 Senkisha became independent from NAPP. In November 1931, NAPP was dissolved to form the Japan Proletarian Cultural Federation (abbreviated as COP), and publication ceased with the December issue. There were a total of 43 issues, excluding revised editions due to bans and other reasons. Other supplements included "Boy's Senki" and "Women's Senki". In defiance of severe oppression, 23,000 copies were published at its peak. It carried works and critiques representative of NAFF by Takiji Kobayashi's "March 15, 1928" and Sunao Tokunaga's "A Town Without the Sun," as well as works by Shigeharu Nakano, Tomoyoshi Murayama, and Korehito Kurahara, overwhelming the activities of the rival Labor-Farmer Artists League and reflecting the activities of the proletarian literature movement of this period to the greatest extent. It has been reprinted (1976-77, by the Battle Flag Reprint Publishing Association).
