Butterfly - Kocho

Japanese: 蝴蝶 - こちょう
Butterfly - Kocho
A short story by Yamada Bimyo. Published in Kokumin no Tomo in January 1889 (Meiji 22). A historical piece based on the fall of the Taira clan at Dannoura, it is a tragic tale that unfolds between the Taira clan's wife Kaicho and the young samurai Jiro. The story is ornately written in a colloquial style that was new for the time, and tells the story of Kaicho's shock and despair when she finds out that Jiro is a spy for the Genji clan and is planning to reveal the whereabouts of Emperor Antoku, her anguish and decision that leads to her killing him, and the tragic fate of this decision being nullified by the emperor's death.
