Although several identical ships may be built, each ship usually has a different shape. For this reason, it is necessary to calculate for each ship how the volume of the flooded parts (displacement volume), the center of volume (center of buoyancy), the metacenter, the area of the flooded parts of the hull surface, and various void coefficients change with the draft. These calculation methods are called ship calculations. Most calculations are area calculations to determine the area, volume, and their center positions, and are performed by determining the half-width values of each part of the hull for each draft from an offset table or hull diagram that determines the hull shape of the submerged parts, or by using simple instruments such as a planimeter or integrator.

同形船を何隻か建造する場合もあるが，船の形状は1隻ごとに異なるのがふつうである。このため，浸水部の容積(排水容積)とその体積中心(浮心)位置，メタセンター位置，船体表面の浸水部面積，各種肥瘠（ひせき）係数などが喫水とともにどのように変化するかを，各船ごとに計算で求めておく必要がある。これらの計算方法を船舶算法と呼んでいる。計算の大半は，面積，体積およびそれらの中心位置を求める求積計算で，水に浸る部分の船体形状を定めるオフセット表ないしは船体線図より，各喫水ごとの船体各所の半幅の値を知り数値計算を行うか，プラニメーター(面積計)またはインテグレーター(積分計)などの簡単な器械を用いて行われる。
