The highest research institute in the Republic of China. The predecessor of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Its English name is Academia Sinica. It was founded in June 1928 using the Academia Sinica, a graduate school in the Republic of China, as its parent. Its first president was Cai Yuanpei. It initially had eight research institutes: physics, chemistry, astronomy, meteorology, geology, engineering (civil engineering and architecture), social science, and history and linguistics. It was later expanded to include psychology, zoology, botany, mathematics, and medicine. It was regarded as a central institution in the establishment of a research system by the Nationalist government after the successful Northern Expedition, and lived up to these expectations by achieving far greater results than during the rule of the Beiyang warlords, but the path to development was blocked by the Second Sino-Japanese War.
