The largest river on the Atlantic coast of North America, flowing from Lake Ontario, the eastern end of the Great Lakes, into the Atlantic Ocean. In French, it is called Le Saint‐Laurent. The upper reaches form the border between Canada and the United States. It joins with its tributary, the Ottawa River, near Montreal, and flows through Trois‐Rivières to Quebec. Downstream, the river widens rapidly, reaching a width of about 150 km at its mouth near Anticosti Island. Downstream from Trois‐Rivières, it is a tidal river. The length of this stretch is 1,167 km, but the broader definition of the St. Lawrence River, or the St. Lawrence system, includes the Great Lakes and is one of the world's largest river systems, with a total length of 3,060 km and a drainage area of 1.29 million km2.
