(1) Colonial Period (1600-1760s) It is often said that contact between Indians and whites began with friendship and ended with hostility, but this is not true. In Virginia, the first British colony, Captain John Smith and his men intimidated the Powhatan tribe with weapons from the beginning, forcing them to surrender corn and starting a war. The "marital peace" between Pocahontas and John Rolfe was also a balance of terror rather than friendship, and it resulted in a major Powhatan uprising in 1622, followed by a war of conquest that lasted for 20 years until resistance ceased.
